50 Experts Rank Top User Engagement Metrics to Track in 2020
Repeat visits per week and per month give us a strong indicator of the value of the offering to our customers. I’d love for any offering to be part of my customers’ daily lives, but that may not always be the reality. The important thing is that customers are finding value and repeatedly using the service.
The monthly visits per month allow us to monitor usage over time, without the noise that can come from monitoring it on a daily or weekly basis. The weekly visits statistic gives us an early indicator if the usage trend is changing, but monitoring usage weekly requires much more of a subjective view based on holidays, seasonal trends, industry events, etc. – said Kurt Uhlir | Chairman and Chief Growth Executive @ The Made in America Movement
One of the biggest mistakes that companies make with their products and services is not testing various target markets BEFORE they build new products or features. Marketing serves as eyes and ears in the market to determine where the magnetic attractions are and begin to create marketing gravity around those features that resonate with the market.

Funding Advice From 11 PropTech Executives and Investors
I loved being able to answer Nate’s questions as both an executive and an investor. Here’s just a small part of the overall interview. Definitely check out his other 10 interviews as well.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give to real estate technology founders who are considering raising capital to scale their business?
Just because someone will invest in your company does not mean you should let them. Every dollar (or $100K) is worth the same amount. However, there are costs and benefits that come along with every investor. A good investor is like a good running partner. When there’s a good fit, both sides feel comfortable and glad to be helping the other one reach his or her goals. It’s essential that you get along well with the investors and trust them.
CMO of Showcase IDX, Kurt Uhlir, said that day of the predetermined, sequential customer journey is over, but the exercise of thinking through and documenting the typical stages of a customer’s journey is one of the most valuable things most companies can do.
“The key to successful high-growth marketing today is to understand the intent behind a potential customers’ actions and meet them where they are at any given time,” he said. “There will be customers that will go through a typical buyer’s journey in a matter of hours or days, and there will be others that will take months or even years. Your marketing has to let them understand the experience of choosing your product, connect with them emotionally, and answer their questions (some of which they may not even know they have).”

No Degree Needed: Do These Things to Get a Job in Digital Marketing
“If you can an apprenticeship where the marketing expert will train you what effective marketing looks like in the real world for a business and will help you build your portfolio, that can accelerate your marketing career by two to five years.” Uhlir continues: “The experience and knowledge you’ll receive in an apprenticeship will put you not only farther ahead than your peer, but also further along than many people with a few years of marketing experience.”

14 Proven Ways to Encourage Customers to Write Reviews
“Even the happiest customers are busy,” Uhlir says. “But when they’ve worked with your brand and are approaching a new milestone (e.g. renewal, completion of a campaign, additional purchase, etc.), they are usually focused on the benefits of your product/service and are motivated to see you succeed. Timing your request for an authentic review to right before a milestone does two things: 1) it improves the chance that they’ll take the time right then to write the review, and 2) it gives you the opportunity to follow up after the milestone with a reminder if needed,” Uhlir says.

47 Niche Content Marketing Agencies and Who They Help Best (Zerys – 200,000 subscribers)
“We love creating long-form content (e.g. 4,000—10,000 words) and research surveys to create proprietary data for our clients,” said Kurt Uhlir, President of Ethereal Innovations.
“We reached out to 25,000+ HR professionals and 17,000+ executives, on behalf of The Made in America Movement, to compile that data for the 2017 HR and Recruiting Survey. This let us find out how much productivity and financial waste was occurring due to traditional interviewing processes and the modern tools and strategies that top organizations are using in their hiring.
From this single piece of content, we created whitepapers, a summary report, two webinars, 75 social media posts, other pieces of content for the 20,000 businesses the organization serves. The summary report can be found here.
We’ve done similar work for our clients in real estate and SaaS, where we’ll create one single long-form piece of content that we’re able to put through our workflow to create hundreds of valuable pieces of bite-sized content.”

The 28 Blog KPIs that Most Content Marketers Recommend Tracking (databox)
“Overall traffic, the number of visitors, and even signups are important, but those are trailing indicators to performance and can take months to fully develop as Google’s algorithm ranks the page. The number of comments is a leading indicator of how the content is resonating with your visitors.”
Results: 95% open rate and a 70%+ reply rate — “I think too many companies take themselves too seriously and too many marketers fail to remember how much emotions and personal connections weigh into the decision to purchase a product or service,” Uhlir says. “This subject line instantly lets the prospect know that they will be working with another person, not simply a helpdesk ticketing system or order-taker.”

8 Proven Ways to Reduce Your Facebook Ad CPM
Call on Your Tribe to Promote: Kurt Uhlir of Showcase IDX said, “I’ve seen multiple campaigns at different companies reduce their Facebook Ad CPM by 80% just by forming a group of people that will react and comment on new ads.” “After creating a new ad or series of ads,” Uhlir advised, “let your group know and ask them to engage if they find it relevant and useful.” Explaining why that kind of engagement early on in an ad’s lifecycle can lower CPMs, Uhlir added, “This engagement will show Facebook’s algorithm that people find your content useful, and they’ll show it to more people.”
Create multiple custom audiences and map when you add a potential customer to each and when you remove them, then work that process,” says Kurt Uhlir of Showcase IDX. “As prospects choose to discover more about your offering, you need to meet them where they are with a message that helps them be more of who they are. You can easily do this by using the Facebook Pixel and custom audiences from Facebook engagement to provide potential clients exactly what they need,” Uhlir says.

The 49 SEO KPIs That Marketers Are Tracking Most
Link-Building Momentum: “Consistent growth in the number of backlinks you’ve won over time has a huge positive impact on your rankings and will keep you from being penalized,” says Kurt Uhlir of Showcase IDX. “If you build links too fast, then the algorithm sees it as link manipulation, and you could stay in the sandbox indefinitely. In the beginning, keep it to 1-3 links per week. Once you have a decent amount of traffic, then the possibility of you ‘naturally’ gaining links increases. This is where you can turn up the velocity. Sites with 50+ visitors per day can easily increase up to 5-8 links per week. Sites with 100+ visitors per day can pretty much build as many links as they want as fast as they’d like.”
Consistency: “Measure the number of consistent days you’re posting to each channel,” says Kurt Uhlir of Showcase IDX. “No network provides this directly, but it’s the most important factor in social media success for both B2B and B2C brands. Having been part of the team that helped Facebook create pages for brands and the tools thousands of brands have used to be successful on every network, consistent posting is by far the most important factor in audience growth, engagement, and conversion to sales. Other metrics are important and can help improve the type and topic of content, but tracking consistency creates momentum and is the single biggest factor in success on social.”

The Single Most Misunderstood Aspect of the Instagram Algorithm (ShareThis)
“The Instagram algorithm has one goal: increase engagement on the platform. Many people do not realize how much one-on-one interactions help boost your accounts reach. Direct messages that are replied to, especially when there are multiple exchanges, have a huge effect on boosting your overall account reach. When someone replies to your direct messages, that is a strong indication to Instagram that your account is valuable to others, and they’ll show even regular posts to more people.”

15 Entrepreneurs Explain Their Favorite Apps to Use for Their Business (CEO Blog Nation)
Instagram: Having lead both large companies and high-growth smaller companies, Instagram is the best business app I’ve used over the past few years. Most people are visual people and Instagram lets me tell both our official story while also providing more in-depth live videos and glimpse into the people that make the magic happen. A company’s product has to solve a real problem, but we buy from people, not companies. Instagram is a great way to consistently showcase both and then start one-on-one conversations with people or continue the conversations with customers. Plus, I have developed a few strong friendships with other entrepreneurs that I’ve met because we’re both sharing authentic views into our journeys.

21 Real Estate Marketing Strategies (Hint: None Are Facebook) (The Close)
Use Instagram Voice Message DMs: “Realtors need to start using Instagram voice messages sent via direct messages and using them at scale. In the last quarter of 2018, I started running experiments with several hundred real estate agents and the results were incredible. Many agents view Instagram primarily as a brand awareness effort, but voice message DMs start a conversation that let you quickly reach people on an emotional level. I’ve seen a 27% increase in engagement with engagement and a 50% increase in qualified leads. It’s easy to do as well. Simply open your phone, click to an individual’s profile, click the message link, and then hold down the microphone icon to send a message. When you release the icon, the message will automatically send.”

Lead Generation Tips And Tricks For Startups (Fupping) – Thanks to readers for voting my tip #1 again.
Referrals from Incredibly Happy Early Customers: The path to success for early-stage companies comes from making your first few customers incredibly successful and incredibly happy. It’s hard to get your first few customers, and many startups often do not have the perfect product/market fit. Your goal should be to get very close to your early customers, learn the intricacies of their problems, and try to make them incredibly successful in their jobs. When you focus on the success of those early customers, you not only get raving fans that will be happy to give you case studies but you also get people willing to pick up the phone and tell their friends about your company.

22 Entrepreneurs Explain How They Maintain Work/Life BalanceTop 10 Digital Marketing Quotes to Inspire You in 2018 (CEO Blog Nation)
Prioritizing family: Too many people build successful companies and fail in their personal lives (their own words), while others have wonderful family lives but waste millions of venture funding struggling with both work and personal relationships. For me, the most successful entrepreneurs are those that have chosen to unbalance their life at different times when working towards certain milestones. I’m a huge believer in intentional rest and downtime, as well as prioritizing family.
However, when launching a company or reaching for certain critical growth milestones, there is often a certain amount of effort that is needed. As an example, it takes most founders 250 phone calls/meetings to raise their Seed round of funding. Those meetings could be spread out over nine months, or with a laser focus, the same number of meetings could happen in 45 days. I encourage entrepreneurs to always keep family first in their lives, and sometimes that means having a discussion that says that you’re going to really focus on something for a month or two so that you can have more normal hours as quickly as possible.

12 IoT Trends: Experts Answering How IoT Will Evolve by 2020 (NewGenApps)
Smart Cities to Become Mainstream: Smarter cities will spread across the globe. There are a handful of cities, such as Singapore, Seoul, and Boston, that have started early investments into how to use IoT to create smarter cities. The majority of these IoT rollouts in cities have focused on invisible behind the scenes parts of city operations that few people see, touch, or use. Even the most advanced users have not seen a noticeable change to date. In 2017, we saw cities rolling out more sensors and technology to take advantage of existing data collection tools, such as cameras and positioning chips.
In 2018, we’ll see forward-thinking cities invest in innovative data exchanges that allow for the combination and access of data between citizens, public institutions, and private organizations. The combined data that will be available is where things get interesting. We’ll see a shift in thinking from IoT and smarter cities to a genuinely responsive city that reduces traffic congestion, improves safety, and unlocks sustainable development.

Don’t Blame the Robots for Lost Manufacturing Jobs (Alliance of Americans for America) – radio interview
Bring Our jobs Home Communications Director Dan Murphy recently interviewed Kurt Uhlir from the Made in America Movement about technology and American jobs, on Murphy’s WVOX 1460 AM radio show.
Uhlir echoed a sentiment that we, and others, have stated. “Companies need to realize that the cost of building their products here in the U.S. is much cheaper than sending it overseas,” he said. “The increase in efficiencies and technologies created here show that you can build it here. Ninety five percent of clothing sold here is made overseas. But there is new technology that allows robots, which are still run by highly skilled workers, to put sweatshops out of business.
“But even for other companies, studies show that Americans are willing to pay more for something that is made in the U.S.A.,” continued Uhlir. “But the most interesting part is that they did the same survey in China and found a majority of Chinese residents wanted to pay more for American-made products. Companies just don’t look at what the research shows.”

Social Media Marketing Trends 2016: Insights & Predictions (linkdex)
Companies Will Reimagine Their Branding on Social: Recent research show that 92 percent of people trust strangers over brands and almost 50 percent of U.S. consumers are using ad-block technologies. It’s not just that the tools have changed; the entire game has changed.
Consumers no longer want to be “sold to” or told what to think about brands. Leading brands are investing in resources to reimagine how they tell the story and experience of their brand.
We’ve moved well past cute memes and inspirational quotes. In 2016, we will see more brands shifting their social media strategy to focus on authenticity, building trust, and more high quality user-generated content.
The Influence Economy Will Dominate Social: As consumers continue to shift away from legacy media and demand a different relationship with brands, marketers must more deeply engage their brand ambassadors and influencers on all social channels and encourage them to be part of the brand’s story.
Consumers are spending more time interacting with influencers on social, and word-of-mouth from long tail influencers are starting to drive huge shifts in consumer spending. The brands that embrace influencers correctly will be able to combat the loss of organic reach on social and will see significant increases their reach and engagement, without having to increase ad spend or headcount.
